Docksides, Top-sider, Boat Shoes and Deck Shoes

One of the most requested shoes for men this summer has been the boat shoes, but we can also say that the top-siders, docksides and deck shoes are also desired by the male audience, not because a multitude of nautical footwear models have taken the stores this season, but the truth is that all these names designate the same kind of shoes a little more open with stitched toe, sole with zigzag grooves (or similar) and leather laces, however variations in canvas, with securing cord, keeping the original design also are also named.

The story of the boat shoe begins in 1936 when the former officer in the U.S. Navy, Paul Sperry, noticed that your cocker spaniel could run over the ice keeping your traction, even on a surface so slippery, so that the grooves and cuts that would give texture to the bottom of the Paws of the dog allowed such performance. He quickly patented sole your Razor-Siping and created in 1935 the first shoe for nautical sports, making it in a few years a success among boaters, closing a contract with the U.S. Navy in 1939 to provide the Sperry Top-Sider to sailors who had to walk firmly on decks of ships while defending the country.

Below you see a video (in English), short way, the story of the creation of top-sider of Sperry :

From there the Sperry became synonymous with boat shoe and the term top-sider, also created by Paul, won the world, following the success of the company that saw your shoes be worn by people of all ages, in several occasions, migrating from marinas to the urban environment. Today Sperry’s for this type of shoe as the Dr. Martensstands for boots and Converse canvas tennis with rubber tip, you can’t talk about one without thinking of the other.

So far so good, we know that the Sperry created not only footwear, as the term that designates, in spite of the others that have been emerging as boat shoes (shoes for boats) and deck shoes (shoes for deck) that are so obvious names as saying that cleats are soccer shoes (shoes for football). But then when it appeared the docksides?

Exactly 10 years after the emergence of top-sider of Sperry was founded the Sebago by 3 friends from New England, Daniel j. Wellehan, SR., William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau, launching your first product, a penny loafer hand-stitched. In the years 70, with your consolidated footwear market reputation and millions of pairs sold the Sebagocreated your own boat shoe and the baptized of Docksides, probably to make an allusion to the competitor of Sperry, but at the same time avoid any beef with the rival company. In the years 80 the docksides won the campus of American universities and the brand became the sponsor of a boat in the important race the-Star, among others, and eventually provide shoes for the American team. The pop status of Sebago was guaranteed and the name docksides now was part of the vocabulary of the people as much as the fiftieth anniversary top-sider, all thanks, among other things, a marketing campaign done right!

In the 90 years the boat shoe lost some of your brightness; dazzled by technological tennis on one side, formal shoes and boring fashion of the Decade on the other, was relegated to the category of footwear for older people and conservative.

But then how did companies such as Sperry and Sebago managed to survive and still go back to the top of the choices of men’s shoes?

Simple, all he needed was to be redesigned and updated! In the last decade the deck shoe won combinations of different textures, prints and colorful soles that left as fashion as any other shoe, but with some advantages: your song in a little more open, the fact of being used without stocking and the retro/nautical touch made him perfect for summer with combinations always present in man’s clothing like shorts color, jeans or pants.
